WARNING, THIS IS CONFIRMED A SCAM BY PAYPAL.

For me it started out as a listing on ebay, where I was selling technology for $300.

Someone got in contact - 'Rosalina' and after that 'David', whereby offering me $400 with express postage to the US included.

I did my calculations, and said - 'OK'. They asked for my full name and paypal address, I supplied. At no point did they click 'Buy Now', which should have been a red flag.

I then received this email:

Subject: You received a payment - ship now

Please process this order as soon as possible

Dear XXXXXXX,

You received a payment of $400.00 AUD from Roseline George. Please process your order right away.
This payment is now in your pending balance and temporarily unavailable. This money will be moved to your available balance and released to you in 12 - 48 Hours (as long as there are no problems with your orders).

Here are a few steps you can take:
Ship your item quickly. Then send the receipt you get from the post office to us at: paymentsdesk6@accountant.com in other for us to mark it as shipped on the Transaction Details page. We would estimated your payment release date: Within 24 - 36 hours of the delivery date immediately.

I checked my Paypal balance, but realised I had to release the unit before I would be paid.

I emailed Paypal asking if this was legitimate. Paypal's response is as follows:

Thank you for contacting PayPal with your concern.

I hope you're doing good and glad to see that you've taken an initiative to confirm this first instead of taking any step further. 

As per your account details, I'm unable to see any such email being sent by us hence I can assure you its a fake email and there is no payment on hold.

Please forward the email at phishing@paypal.com.au so that we can investigate this. 

Apart from that, we never tell our customer's that it will take 6-12 hours for the funds to be released.

To help you out, I’ve passed the comments to the relevant team to see if we can come with a solution for this.

eBay also got into contact shortly afterwards, via an automated system:

• You will be paying a scammer to ship your item to them
•  You may receive a ban on your eBay account
•  You will be getting scammed.
